Which was five years ago, and my first ever trip to bali. I saved $1100 (off the top of my head), and i ran out of money! lol! And i didnt buy lots of expensive brand name surfwear, i got a dress made, and a leather jacket, (About $200 total) and everything else was just bits and pieces of the treasures you find in bali. From now to august she could probably get at least another $300 in her savings, tell her from me, it will be worth missing out for a few months to be able to go mad in bali!!
There is nothing worse than having no money left and still seeing things you really want. But.. if she cant save much more, $500 will still get her some pretty nice things, providing she is wise with her purchases. Hope that helps!!
