It might not be the 'norm', but in defence of AA, on our last trip to Bali we were way, way over the luggage allowance.
(fairly new to this forum at the time, the wealth of information here, gave us the inspiration to collect what-ever we could for donations).
Not realising one 'should' arrange well in advance with the relevant air-line ... we'd left it to the last minute. When I phoned AA they suggested we just ask at the weigh-in, which we did and thanks to the nice staff there, we had no problem and paid no excess.
(Also, as I posted before, on our return flight the captain made a special announcement and made a very gradual descent to try to help a young child suffering with a severe ear infection).
So as the saying (sort-of goes):
You can't please people all of the time ... but if you try sometimes ... you ... just might get - what you need!
