NYEPI DAY ???

Hi All,
Has anyone been in Bali during Nyepi Day ? Are you allowed to walk the streets/beach etc if you want or is this frowned upon ? We are suppose to check out of our hotel on the 30th of March and move to a new hotel. It is within walking distance but dont want to offend the Balinese by walking around the streets if they prefer you to stay at hotel. Thanks for any info :O)
