I was speaking to Qantas (AA) yesterday, and initially got the same response you did, but in the end all they really wanted was that I could show "commercially run" accommodation had been booked for the whole time. A print of an email confirmation would be fine, apparently. Hope this helps - our non package accom is timeshare, but as long as we have a piece of paper showing the booking, to show IF ASKED at checkin, it will be fine.
