We've never had any problem taking with NZ dollars on our last two trips - were able to exchange it everywhere. We just split our $$ between us for the trip over (keep safely in a money belt on our person at all times!) and then put it into the hotel safe on arrival.
For our last trip it was suggested to us to divide the cash into envelopes so that you dont have a big wad of cash to manage - this was good securitywise - and with the money for the activities we planned set aside before leaving anything left over was for spending :-)
We also take our Westpac Trust Visa card as its the only NZ credit card that doesnt charge a fee to withdraw funds overseas if your a/c is in credit - so we bank 1/2 of our spending money to this card before we leave and ATM it as needed. This saves all the hassles of dealing with money changers - however its still good to have cash in case the machine swallowed your card or was out of money!
