We had our mobile set up for global roaming for our visit in sept/oct only going to use it if we really had to.
Recd several SMS from home and could not reply as Telstra had not activated global roam. Its apparently a "manual function to activate at there end" so the story went
A call to Telstra from the hotel was reimbursed by Telstra (credit on our mobile acct). All sorted thank goodness as the mobile became very active a couple days later.
It might be worth asking optus for a refund on the call cost as a credit on your next phone bill.
