Whether you can renew in Bali depends on the visa you get. The choices are:
1. 60 day tourist visa - cannot be renewed.
2. Social Visa (Sosial Budaya or SOSBUD) is good for 60 days when you enter and Indonesia and can be extended 30 days 4 times - a total of almost 6 months. For this visa you need a sponsor (Indonesian or foreigner with KITAS) who sends a letter of gurantee, etc. with which you then apply the visa.
There is also Business Visas which can be extended in Bali and also require sponsor.
