hey...i have just returned from a four month stint in bali. My opnion is that there aren't many australians. There are alot of japanese, swedish, and german....but the aussies are really down on numbers. your cheap accomodation and eating places are still faily busy with long term travelers, back packers and students but your more upmarket hotels and resturaunts are very empty. A close friend of mine works at bounty hotel (aussie dominated)....in december he told me that this time of the year they are usually fully booked months in advance and now they are only at 30% occupancy....then mid january someone who was staying there told me they only had four rooms occupied and it was pretty much the same for the barong. What i found surprising was going out at night....some places that used to be very busy are now very quite and other places are packed full of people.....(bounty and embargo specifically). there also seems to be more locals out then ever before and alot of 'domestic' tourists.
As for the flights they were still full for me both ways :) i'm sure it will be diffrent but bali is still the place to be...i hope you love it.
cheers,
kirsten
