Did Phuket for the first time last June then Bali on the way home for the ninth time. The phi phi islands were just absolutely stunning with the bluest water I have ever seen - really pretty.
But Phuket itself is not my sort of place. I did not find the locals as friendly as the Balinese. Found it very difficult to get spicy food as most restaurants were catering for European tourists who dont like it hot.
I also disliked the volume of old very unattractive men who had purchased some local ladies for their holiday. But I did wonder if this was the reason the Thai were not as friendly? I dont think I would like those sort of people around my home all the time.
Anyway, I'm glad I went and experienced it but I wont be going back to southern Thailand again. It also reinforced for me, just how lovely Bali is.
Go and experience it, you may love it!
