I love both, Thai people are less aggressive and I have 2 Thai girlfriends so i know very well.
I Love thai food also...
I love Bali though and is very close to me with just a 3 1/2 hour plane flight and I know the place so well i feel very at peace when i am there.
Shopping...well i managed to fill my suitcase along with hubby's and daughters in Thailand no worries and very cheap but i am the shopper from hell hehehe and i did go to bangkok and Pattaya..the latter which is less touristy and therefore cheaper.
Go to both and more places..travel as much as you can and enjoy all.
