Try Three Brothers - good, quiet location between Jl Padma Utara & a lane leading up to Jl Legian. It's on the right heading from Jalan Padma past Garden View. Very nice grounds, pool etc - a variety of rooms - plenty of long-term stayers. I have known many people in over 20 plus years who have stayed there long-term & been happy there. Busy during August when the Euros are out in force. In Sept 05 prices for short stays were US$30 per room for big upstairs aircon priv balcony room. Non aircon US$20 - cheaper for longer of course and probably even cheaper after the "troubles" Negotiate.

ALSO, you could do what we used to do - take a walk down the back lanes from Double Six towards Seminyak. Also head into Caangu. You'll see signs up on gangs "villa to rent". Check them out. It's a nice way to get off the main drag and see the delightful sidestreets only used by residents and the enclaves people have created. Also, on arrival get the free Expat newspaper (forget the name - you'll find it in restaurants) with ads for rentals.

We lived there for 8 months & luckily found a delightful family losmen which is sadly gone. Good luck:)
