English is not widely spoken but you will find people who can. Even if your Indonesian is basic they will love you. It is said that 25 million Indonesians can't speak Indonesian, and I reckon half of them live in Yogya. Because of the blending of /p/ & /b/ in central Java you are in for a wild ride understanding some things there, meaning confusion about ber- verbs and per- nouns. But for me this is the attraction. A lot of older people in Yogya only speak Javanese. But please dont let that put you off. People say that the Balinese are polite and I agree with that - but no tribe in Indonesia is more polite than the people of Yogya & Solo. They take the gold silver and bronze for this.
Anything less than 3 nights 2 days is really cutting it fine in my opinion.
