If your friend isnt happy with you offering them 1 million then that is disappointing to say the least. 5 Million is a lot to be asking for and while he may genuinely need to pay the hospital bill, surely he must realize that you dont always get what you ask for.
I would leave it and if you dont get any further response and want to follow it up then call and speak with him. He could be out of credit, or could be sulking...you never know what the monkeys are up to...
