last year we took some friends over for the first time and one (26yo guy) was pretty intimidated by all the street vendors selling their wares and it took him a few days to adjust. on about the 4th day of our trip we were lounging around the pool when he decided he needed something to do. he was feeling pretty confident and ventured out into the street alone to buy himself a hacky sack.
it should have been a quick trip down the street as there were a dozen shops along the lane to our hotel that was just off JL Legian, but an hour or so later he returned followed by half a dozen balinese women chasing him for money.
it turned out that the store he went to didn't have any hacky sacks but of course knew where to get one. so while he waited he had a "free" or non-negotiated massage and manicure. so by the time the lady got back with the hacky sack 6 different women wanted a piece of him.
he ended up paying 300,000rp for the hacky sack (not worth much more than a couple of bucks here at home anyway) which cleaned him out so he had no money for the other ladies. the women chased him back to the hotel where he coughed up another couple of hundred rps and they teased him everytime they saw him there after. it was hilarious, as we walked past them everyday for two weeks after that, and it seemed where ever we went around kuta someone knew him.
