Last April I returned from my holiday with 2 large timber jewellery boxes from Geneva. They are absolutely stunning I think and about the size of a laptop computer only thicker. As I came back into Perth the customs guy checked one of them in particular quite thoroughly and then gave me a slip with phone numbers and addresses of the Quarantine Office in Perth and said to keep watch for any powdery residue coming from the timber and if I found anything to ring and they woiuld fumigate it free of charge.Well I had been checking under it each time I dusted ( ok I should've dusted a bit more often !!) but only recently found definate spots of powder so am now waiting for the local Quarantine man to come and collect it.It will be interesting to see if they charge me for the fumigation ? I honestly think it will be worth me paying it as it was so cheap to buy but I am hopeful they wont charge. Will post a message when i find out more for anyone who is interested. Just pays to check as much as possible while you are purchasing wooden things.I read on this forum that you can treat the timber by using fly spray and heavily coating the wood in it then wrapping in a plastic bag and letting it sit for a few days but I did this and told the guy at customs and he said that really doesnt work as the borer burrows in that deep it can lay dormant for up to 16-17 years !!!! So the good old fly spray just wont do it...maybe it does work with some other little critters but not the borer !!
