Kirsten, for your information, the temporary stay visa is precisely as it's name - you can stay temporarily. A social/budaya visa can be "changed" (applied for in country) to a temporary stay visa (KITAS). You cannot extend a normal tourist visa. You cannot work on any visa at all. You do require a temporary or permanent stay visa in order to have a work permit - only this allows you to work in Bali.
As far as I am aware, it is far easier for females to get temporary stay visas if married to Indonesians, than for males. Men have to have work, and for that you require work permits.
Women can have an "ikut suami" (with the husband) visa, which allows them to look after the house and family only.
