To lose a loved one can never be anything but devastating, but when there is distance between you it must be even harder, not being able to be there to share your grief with everyone else who loved him. Maybe you can do this trip, not looking at it as a holiday, but as a trip to say the farewell that circumstances stole from you. You can take flowers and perhaps some precious memento you can place (there is a period of burial before cremation -as the family would probably need to save for the cost of this- so you will indeed have a tangible place to say your words of love), and there will be sunsets and special places you can find there to let you grieve, and perhaps help you find a little healing. Go - to say goodbye, because you deserve to be able to do that.
