There's a few reasons. Mostly that it's probably as cheap as you'll get for calling home. I called my mum on her birthday (she's in NSW) and it cost me Rp80,000 for about a 10 minute call - just over $10. I did make a quick call from the hotel phone and it cost me Rp83,000 for a 4 minute call.
The second reason that it's a good idea is that if they really need to call you they can do it as they'll have a number to contact you directly.
I also found it was useful for making local calls in Bali for booking restaurants, taxis etc. And also handy for sending local SMS with any local friends you may have or any tourists you might meet while there.
