There's something new and unexpected around every corner, and so many differernt parts of the city, you could spend a year there and still be learning new things. The wats are fantastic. There's some great, reasonably priced golf courses (but that's apparently the same all over Thailand, as with the incredible food). Plenty of shows, both modern and traditional. Freaky floating markets. Frankly, I don't see how anyone could get bored enough to go see people do weird things with ping-pong balls -- that's the sort of thing that should go on in country Victoria, where there's bugger-all else to do.
But yeh, if you're going to Thailand for 10 days of looky-look, it's definitely worth popping out to see the amazing countryside. I can take or leave the beaches of the world, but those I saw in Thailand (Cha-am and Hua-Hin) were definitely cleaner than stinky Kuta Beach, and there's no-one shouting "mister mister" every second.
