And when I dream of food, I tend not to spend much time fantasising about stuff that's on the menu at the pub up the road.
What I loved about Asia is that you don't have to go up the road to get food. Here's a guy selling squid-on-a-stick. Next to him someone's cooking sate. Here comes the bakso man with his tunes tootling. In a few minutes some guy will come past pushing a cart with fried noodles. And there's kids running around selling some kind of doughy stuff in a spicy sauce, prawn crackers, cakes, biscuits. And now there's a lady with a bunch of fruit.
Even if I get so fat that I can't make it to the pub down the road, it won't matter, coz food is always within reach, and an alternative is on its way past.
That's my dream... to stay in Indonesia long enough to morph into some kind of Jabba the Hut creature... totally immobile in my house made of sate sticks, stuffing food in my gob and listening out for the dude with sop ayam on the back of his bike.
