Dayu herself is not a girl with any kind of influence, but she is what you could call well connected by family. None of that makes any difference to Ron's situation. For him to get any kind of work in Bali would be difficult and well paid work is virtually out of the question.

He comes to Perth two or three times a year for a few weeks and does contract work. This gives him enough money to comfortably provide for his family and generally lead a pretty relaxed sort of life.

Except for those of us who are retired and either adequately superannuated or on a pension [or already reasonably well off], then that's probably the best way to do it. Of course to do it that way, you need to have a wanted trade or profession, which allows you to come and go when you feel like it and still pick up reliable work.
