So I did a search and found a fair bit of info @ www.pearlinfo.com. I have also heard that rubbing them against your teeth is not always definitive, so I tried heating my real Broome pearls with a lighter for a second. It left no marks. Then I did it to some cheap cultured ones - it left a black mark like charcoal, but it was easily rubbed off! I presume it just burnt some residue on the pearls. So the answer is, a flame will not melt real pearls.
