You can pay in Australian dollars. They'll give the change in rupiah.

Travel agents seem to be giving a lot of people bad information, in saying it "must" be paid for in US dollars. I spoke to a lot of people in Bali who'd been told this and were annoyed to find out later on they could have paid in aussie dollars and saved the conversion fee.
