Can totally retate to your frustration!!! I got married nearly 10 years ago. Passport (in my maiden name) was up for renewal earlier this year. I have travelled overseas twice (apart from my honeymoon) and just went under my maiden name - no problems. Went to renew passport this year and experienced all the hassles you mentioned as I had to change it to my married name (I have a hyphenated name too which caused even more confusion!) Couldn't just renew the passport had to apply for a completely new one and pay for the certified copy of my marriage certificate etc. etc. Got everything together and went off to my post office only to be told that they wouldn't accept my marriage certificate since I had a hyphenated name would need to officially register my change of name with births, deaths and marriages (another $130 or so to do that). After many phone calls to the passport office and births, deaths and marriages - getting different answers all the time - I finally sorted it out and got my passport processed without having to pay for registering my new name. What a NIGHTMARE indeed!!!!
