Have been going to Ubud for years and only ever found one dodgy money changer, half way down Monkey Forest Rd. Have had many many perfectly happy transactions. We tend to use Ary's Travel Service, down towards Casa Luna from the main intersection, because they have an air-conditioned shop (yes!), international pay phones and good internet terminals so you can do all your western-world schlep in one go. Also good notice boards about trips, cremations, dances etc. We have also found the ATMs near the supermarket are fine for withdrawing cash. Good service if any problems - one of our friends got cash and forgot to retrieve her card, the door of the booth locked, but se rang the emergency number and the next day (which was Galungan, a major Balinese holiday) a bank staff member came exactly on time and got her card for her.
