From my experiences you can easily hire a car and driver for the day for between 250000-300000rp per day that for 8 hours or so, Fuel etc is also included, you can do that anywhere but ofcourse its a supply and demand thing, in Udud its easy to hire a car & Driver. also you can arrange for a taxi back to kuta sometimes by ringing the company(returning empty cabs) . Search the net for "bali bus"this is another way to get around with accomadation included. Perma also offer buses to get from place to place.
Ubud is very hilly but you could easily walk to some temples the palace, cafe lotus & the markets(all within 1 k on levelish ground) the monkey forest is down the hill from there about 1.5k max but fairly steep(eg mountain bike low gear)
There heaps of treeking to do & some beautiful sites within walking distance and the night offers temple dances etc
most of the sites we visited that trip were within 1 to 2 hours drive max
Transport is never a major problem in Bali but if your stuck expect the price to be more
Cheers
