Did you not use a car seat for the 3 yr old? We're off from Chch in less than 2 weeks and I'm starting to worry as I haven't yet thought much about car seat arrangements for my 4 yr old, and we'll be there for 2 months - wondering if I need to bring a car seat along for him - presumably you were able to bring the infant seat on the plane for free?
Also, curious about what sort of exchange rate you were getting over there, and whether you were exchanging NZ$ or US$ or both?
And were you advised in NZ to have the kids vaccinated against typhoid, hep-A, or anything else? (I ask because local nurse told us the kids should have hep-A vaccines, so we went ahead and got them- but that night when the 9 yr old started vomiting and vomiting and I looked up hep-A vaccine reactions on internet, I was surprised and annoyed to find that hep-A is not considered a serious problem for kids, and that in fact if they do contract hep-A they then acquire life-long immunity - the vaccine only gives about 20 yrs immunity apparently, so they actually lose immunity just about the time when they most need it. So just trying to compare notes with others here in NZ)
