On my first trip to Bali in 1980 (here I go....sounding like a grandma who says "I remember when....")the road from Kuta to Legian was just a small one lane road, sealed but you fell off the edge as the rains eroded the sides of the road way and there was a four inch drop from the sealed part to the dirt. Tha was the undoing of many an unsuspecting Aussie who thought he or she could hire a motorbike, having never ridden before! There were lots of open drains and no gutters. Shops were all just open stalls on this road.
But do you know, the things that have not changed because they don't seem to need much improvement are the really cheap prices, although the quality and range of goods has imporved dramatically, and the happy friendly Balinese! (There are sharks whereever you go in this world. You just need to look for them, if you want to be ripped off!)
