I took large carry-on bag and a small handbag carrying all passports etc. My daughter had her laptop and a small handbag. My sister had a large carry-on bag and small handbag. My niece had a large carry-on bag and 2 cameras around her neck! None of this was weighed, looked at or asked about until we went through the x-ray machine in Perth and the laptop bag was opened up. On arrival in Bali we declared her laptop 2 music cd's and instead of checking them out they checked my suitcase and laughed at me for only having one bottle of wine with me...so I'm not a great drinker! My suitcase had the dreaded white chalk cross mark on it.
On the return we had heaps more as you do...I had the usual Bali carry-on bag and my handbag, my daughter had a large carry-on bag and her laptop and her handbag, my sister had 2 large carry-on bags and her handbag and the niece had a large carry-on bag, a bongo wrapped in a towel and her 2 cameras round her neck! On leaving nothing at all was checked or weighed! We declared some sweets we had brought back with us and was rushed through without them being checked. My niece had the bongo drum taken off her for defumigating but left her the photo albums she had purchased.
On arrival in Bali we were handed a flyer from AA from a Balinese man as we left the airline and this stated what you could and couldn't take back with you, I haven't got it now but it states exactly what the airline tells you.
