Tim,
We came back on the late flight last week, same type of plane. I couldn't the amount of luggage some people expected to bring on to the plane, let alone what they put in the hold. We were in row 20, so got on reasonably quickly being down the back. I watched as successive passengers tried to find room for their cabin luggage above their seats. It was already full with beadspreads, backpacks and cabin cases belonging to one person! I was always of the belief that you could have one bag(designated size and weight), plus a handbag/laptop only as cabin luggage. I followed a lady struggling on with a wheely case(correct cabin size), a shoulder bag twice the case size, plus a paper carry bag with last minute airport shopping in it. Where was it all supposed to fit? In someone elses space - thats where. Some people are too greedy for their own good, which is probably why they offloaded some luggage for fuel allowance concerns.I'm not accusing you of this, but it happens a lot, especially on domestic flights.
These aircraft are designed to take off with a full load(design maximum load of fuel and passengers/baggage) for a specific distance. This includes reserve fuel for emergencies. Basic math tells them that there is too much luggage load for safety, which means that some/all passengers are over their allowable limits.
