Looking For a Small Hotel

That is real friendly, not a huge resort that is less personal.
Does this mean we would have to stay at a 2 or 3 star to find a place like this? Whenever we go to Bali we try to stay at a few different places. But have always found large resorts aren't as friendly with staff or other travellers.
