Yes, you can't always see them. I don't know about four, but I've certainly seen a couple. They're not always visible and I think I'd been to Bali a number of times before I spotted them. Batur would be one of those you see to the north from Legian.
Same thing happened to us visiting Nusa Lembongan. On about our third trip, I just happened to look back at Bali and got the shock of my life to see the volcano just sitting there. I was positive it must've just popped up.
They are spectacular rising up above the clouds.
