"Would they have then threatened you with violence? I doubt it. They don't want the police involved."

Whew! Indonesia is the most corrupt nation in Asia.

I let people know there are organized gangs roaming the streets of Kuta and specifically state they are using intimidation to gain their ill-gotten goods and you say the above?

Surf around and see how much it costs to have someone killed in Bali. Read about the police corruption. I specifically state that THE BANK was most likely in on the scam. Read about the police and how they are in cahoots with the Bali Bombers. Read about the ones who actually lost at the card games and what happened to them.

Folks, these are professional criminal gangs. They aren't poor people short changing tourists. They have a good size house, vans, four members on a contact team, cell phones, bankers and the police in their pockets.

You bet that there is a real potential for violence when you have the above elements in cahoots.
