We loved "Dreamland" - it's a bit further on from the cultural park-but a nice drive. You don't have as much of a walk as to Ulu's - no steps at all, just wander down the slope. This is definelty the nicest beach I have been to in Bali (4 trips). The water is that amazing blue/green, the sand is white, you can hire a beach chair and have food and drink served from the little warungs. See "Enny" at her Warung - sounds like "Annie".
I was a little dissapointed with the beaches around Kuta, Legian on my first visit too.
The surf at Dreamland does break right against the shore and you can get dumped - but it goes into lulls, easy to get in and out, and as long as your not floating on the edge you'll be fine. Put your ipod in and enjoy the atmosphere, lots of Euro types with tiny swim suits, my husband loved it - kids had a great time too.
