In Aus the gun is usually only used for the ears & nose (needle can also be used depending at what place it's done)
All other facial/body piercings are done by needle.
In Bali much the same but you can choose if you wish to use needle or gun for ears/nose.
For other piercings the needle is used
No matter where you are the gun is less hygienic than the needle as many cannot be sterilised in an autoclave.
Agree about placement re blood vessels, cartilage.
Even in Aus those "trained" to know where the vessels etc are ..don't always, especially in the other areas of ear apart from the lobe.)
The place I mentioned in first post uses numbing spray, antiseptic & sterile needles from Australia
Bottom line (much like getting a tattoo)..get informed & then decide for yourself.
