If you are taking prescription drugs, make sure you have sufficient supplies with you before leaving Australia. There are plenty of pharmacies in Bali but most have almost no medication in stock. If they do, it will be only the cheapest alternatives for the different classes of drugs for any given medical condition, which is standard for most, perhaps all, third world countries. I only found one pharmacy in the Legian Rd area who offered to get medication for me. This was Apotek Usadha Medis at JL Raya Legian No 369X Phone (0361)750858 Fax 750858 (this translates to Legian Rd, the closest pharmacy to the traffic lights on the left hand side of Legian Rd heading from Kuta towards JL Padma). If you need prescription drugs, you will most likely not need a doctor's script. However, you may not be able to get the brand you are accustomed to. Ask to see the pharmacy's "Mims", a catalogue of prescription drugs, if the pharmacist doesn't know the drug you need, look it up in the index at the back, either by brand or generic name. If the brand you want is unavailable, there may be an equivalent Indonesian brand listed. For example, my wife needed Moduretic brand of a diuretic, which was unobtainable, but I settled for the Indonesian brand "Lorimid", which proved to be made by the Australian company Alphapharm. Each entry has a wholesale price in rupia, and you can use this as the basis for establishing a fair price. The pharmacy named above first quoted me 250,000 for 50 Lorimid, which I rejected - listed base price was 89,000 and there was no question of bargaining. The next day I returned, as they were the only pharmacy of the many I tried who offered to try and get it for me. The staff was different, and so was the price - 125,000 also not negotiable(I don't know how either pharmacist calculated it). It took them about 36 hours to get delivery. The drugs were well packaged, and did their job. The service the pharmacist gave was excellent, and I tipped her, which she appreciated. Pharmacy hours are much the same as all other shops in Bali.
