Last August we spent 6 days at Hidden Paradise in Lipah village. [That whole area is known colloquially as Amed.] Snorkeling every day, walking on the beach, talking with locals and visitors and meeting interesting people from Holland, France, Germany and Scandinavia.
We ate at different warungs, checked out different hotels, maybe for next time. One night there was a joged dance in one of the restaurants with a large gamelan orchestra. The joged dance is a lot of fun. The female dancer invites people from the audience to get up and dance with her one at a time. You don't have to know how to do it, you just get up and do whatever. Emiko and I are ballroom/Latin dancers and don't mind being on show, so I suppose that's half the battle!
I celebrated my 70th birthday at WaWa WeWe restaurant in the company of a great Dutch couple we met when they invited us onto their hotel balcony to share a drink. A top cop and a health professional. Emiko and I jived to a local rock group.
Prior to going to Amed we spent 6 days at Kubu Bali in Candi Dasa and after Amed 3 days back in CD at Resor Prima. There are drivers in the Amed area, but we used my old friend Wayan Manek [Nick] from CD ph 081 8353501.
The round trip Amed/Candi Dasa is very scenic and interesting. The coast road past Ujung is quiet and very undulating. The inland road past Tirtagganga has magnificent mountain/valley rice terraces.
Going north a little way from Amed there is Tulamben with the American shipwreck close to the beach. Great for scuba or snorkeling. Mt Agung, the highest volcano in Bali is in the background.
Just past Candi Dasa is the Bali Aga traditional village of Tenganan. If you want a good guide, contact my friend Komang. He is a man of the village, but works at Catra New Beach Restaurant in CD.
A bit further on is Padang Bai, the ferry port for Lombok. Apart from the ferry terminal, Padang Bai is like an old Balinese fishing village from way back.
I don't think we had time to do any reading at all!
