Within the last 18 months, I've been handed (at different times) a steak knife and a metal fork during flights.
A friend of mine with commando training showed me how to make six diferent potentially deadly weapons from the usual plastic stuff they give you during a flight.
A female friend delights in showing people the assortment of deadly hair accessories she has worn during flights.
Okay... not exactly an m-16 assault rifle, but the S11 attackers used box-cutters.
And the ingredients needed to make a common explosive device would not show up on an x-ray or metal detector.
There's a long way to go before airport security can deal with highly trained, intelligent and determined nutters. It can really only catch the laziest terrorists.
Does the machine you're talking about use x-rays or any other radiation? Coz if frequent fliers have to walk through x-rays all the time, the tumours will kill them before the terrorists get a chance.
Airport security does serve a purpose. But until they invent some absolutely foolproof system, all it really is is a comforter for nervous people.
Then again, there have been times when it's been so slow and annoying that by the time everyone's on the plane, all they want to do is kill each other.
