Ther only reason locals love the coins is that tourists give them away freely. It's funny that tourists will give away $1 and $2 coins but winge if they are charged 5.000rp more for something. The locals no this so ask for coins. They can't spend them or cash them. They get a very low price from people who work at the airport, who in turn ask tourists to cash them for them.
Really you are better off carrying 5.000 or 10.000rp notes and giving them away to people you deem to be needy.
