My suggestion would be the Dynasty for first timers with kids. There is a kids club there which all the kids seems to enjoy, the hotel is quite large and there are numerous restaurants and facilities. Waterbom Park and the Go-Karts are quite near as well. There is also plenty of shopping around Kuta and you can be as adventurous or quiet as you feel. Don't be too worried about going out and about around Bali though as there is so much to see and do. Go for day trips - you will be able to check out pamphlets etc at the hotel. Don't be nervous about it - you will be surprised that you will feel very very safe in Bali and the people are so friendly, they make the trip.
