(Noel) Allen who is a regular poster represents Rotary and runs the project from Australia.
It costs Australians $110 per year and that covers the full education costs for a elementary school child. Rotary buys is bulk and provides the children annually with their bag of goodies, which includes pens, books, shoes, socks, shirts, shorts, skirts etc. The families dont receive a money handout (which oh course could be used for other purposes). The $110 is fully tax deductible.
There is a forum site which better explains the process at

The Helen Flavell Foundation also runs a similar project.
As you will have gathered you have the opportunity to meet the child you sponsor at their school, and some of us have been lucky enough to be invited to their home and meet their families. It is an eye opener and a wonderful experience.
