My son married a Balinese girl over 6 years ago. Their marriage is legal, under both Indonesian and Australian law. They have bought a house, have a 4 year old boy and live permanently in Bali just a few minutes drive from Seminyak. My daughter-in-law is what you could call "well connected" by family.
You may think that it would be easy for my son to work in Bali if he wanted to, but that is not the case. He comes to Perth 2 or 3 times a year for a few weeks to do contract work and this is sufficient to keep him and his family in Bali for the rest of the time. Apart from any other considerations, he doesn't want to work in Bali in a job which pays less per week than he can earn here in an hour.
