we have stayed at hotel in the cheaper end of the budget and have kept our passports, return tickets and spare credit cards in the safety deposit boxes. we usually take about $1000aud with us change $200 at a time and leave the rest in the safety box. when that runs out we use the visa (we put all our spending money on the visa & make sure its in credit before we go) we withdraw from the many atms around kuta/legian & this works out well cause you get rupiah from the machines - you dont have to change money, and cause its on visa there are no fees. good luck, I personally wouldn't use travellers chq cause I'd be worried about carrying my passport & dl around (using as id to cash chqs) last time we were there a lady had all the familys ppts, money, & credit cards & safety deposit key stolen at hard rock!!
