After having to pay excess baggage nearly every trip to Bali, my travel buddy and I no longer take suitcases. The average suitcase weighs between 5-7 kilos empty (which would cost around $A70 at excess baggage rates, so we only take a few of those stripey plastic zip-up bags from the $2 shop. Anything delicate goes in the wheely type hand luggage and everything else into the plastic bags. You can even take some bubble wrap for fragile stuff. Take along a roll of masking tape for extra reinforcement of the bags, and use that to tape a big symbol on the side of your bags for easy id when you get home.
