Hair extension removal????

I finally decided yesterday to take out my very long hair extensions. Had them in for 3 weeks but I am horrified that I had handfuls of my own hair come out as well. Also it took 6 hours to put them in and 4 to take them out - my own hair is waist length. Does this happen with everybody who has their hair braided? I am not sure that I will get them again if I keep losing hair. Help... suggestions please.
