cos Im a freak and worry about flying with anyone but Qantas - I know, its stupid. Anyway coming back from Bali we were 31 kilos over and not one word was said to us. I don't know if this is because we checked in late and the plane wasn't near its weight maximum but they didn't even batt an eye lid. Basically we were lucky, that should have cost us a fortune. Maybe it is a good idea checking in late, I dunno.
