For months before we went over we would cash aussie dollars for US$ whenever the AU$ was travelling well against the greenback.
We always found a better exchange rate in Bali for US$ in relation to AU$ exchange rate. We were exchanging US$500 at a time and over the 2 week holiday we figured we were about AU$300-AU$350 in front (group of 6) by doing it this way. Just make sure you dont get bad US bills. Try getting year 2000 US$100 notes ....nothing older....you may have problems still in exchanging due to a counterfeit scare on old US notes particularly those dated 1996....we had several old notes that we had to bring back home to exchange no one over there (incl some banks)would take them.
