My very beautiful, talented wife was originally from Northern England, but she was a good ballroom/Latin dancer and she had learned to perform and teach as a Middle Eastern "belly dancer", something in which she excelled. She sometimes used to fool around in some of the restaurants and she'd been noticed by one of our Balinese taxi driver friends.
One evening our friend came to see us and invited us to go somewhere with him as his guest. He emphasised that he was not looking for a fare, this was his treat for us. He took us to a large joged dance in a village. This was a Balinese occasion, we were the only "outsiders" there, but we were made very welcome.
For those not familiar with the joged dance, the female dancer invites people from the audience to dance with her, one at a time. Some of the young Balinese guys try to get a bit fresh and show off in front of their mates, but the dancer is in total control and the guys are not allowed to get too close.
Halfway through the evening, an announcement was made by the compere. Kathy was invited onto the stage to dance with the joged dancer, not in the usual fashion, but as a performer of equal stature. I felt very proud of her and still do.
I lost Kathy a while ago. I am very fortunate, I have a very sweet lady friend, but I don't forget.
