I have just booked Bali garden as is 5 minutes walk to mataharis and art markets.
A new shopping centre next door, waterbom park across the road and each room (go for delux)has inroom safe, tea and coffee,balcony and is right on the beach. They also have interconnecting rooms.
If you want something more up market then across the road and up a bit (even closer to Mataharis) is Ramayana hotel or bali Rani.
In the side street next to Mataharis is Kuta beach club.
