my poles are about 5 metres high (they are bamboo poles that I got from someone at the Melbourne Garden Show a few years ago .. maybe you could find somewhere that sells those really long fishing rod type things?), and as sometimes it gets a bit blowy in Melbourne I slid the poles into conduit which has been cemented into the ground. Then in high gales (no pun Tina!) I just lift the poles with the flags out onto the lawn so they don't snap or get damaged.
